All religions have been made by men. Religion is a monumental chapter in the history of human egotism. No matter what ugly things you may hear about the world, you must believe them. A Juvenal could not depict the horrors masked by its gold and glittering jewels. Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow. It is a mistake to assume that God is interested only, or even chiefly, in religion. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile. How many evils has religion caused! Freedom is a need of the soul, and nothing else. It is in striving toward God that the soul strives continually after a condition of freedom. God above is the inciter and guarantor of freedom. He is the only guarantor. In an unpermissible and unlawful way people have become knowing about Christ, for the only permissible way is to be believing. Anything that one imagines of God apart from Christ is only useless thinking and vain idolatry. The nature of Christ’s existence is mysterious, I admit; but this mystery meets the wants of man. Reject it and the world is an inexplicable riddle; believe it, and the history of our race is satisfactorily explained. |
