Hunger is not debatable. I saw that...where the heart is set on greatness, success in business did not satisfy the craving, but that commonly with an increase of wealth, the desire of wealth increased. There is no source in the world like hunger. Who is rich? He that is content. Who is that? Nobody. The wise man, I affirm, can find no rest in that which perishes, nor will he lend his heart to aught that doth on time depend. A hungry man is not a free man. I am dying of thirst by the side of the fountain. No fear can stand up to hunger, no patience can wear it out, disgust simply does not exist where hunger is; and as to superstition, beliefs, and what you may call principles, they are less than chaff in a breeze. ...Outward luxury, withinthe cruelest worries. Tell me what you eat, and I shall tell you what you are. I have immortal longings in me. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. |
