He who leaves God out of his reasoning does not know how to count. Atheism is rather in the lip, than in the heart of man. He that will believe only what he can fully comprehend must have a very long head or a very short creed. The greatest question of our time is not communism versus individualism, not Europe versus America, not even the east versus the West: it is whether man can bear to live without God. Apart from God every activity is merely a passing whiff of insignificance. In form, the word "God" is small indeed, but in meaning it is infinite. It expresses the greatest thought that ever entered the heart of man. It is lisped by the children, read and known of all men; but also inscribed at the zenith of the universe, and shedding its glory on all below it. There are many truths the full meaning of which cannot be recognized until personal experience has brought it home. Everything that cannot be understood does nevertheless not cease to exist. Let us not pretend to doubt in philosophy what we do not doubt in our hearts. The unrest of this weary world is its unvoiced cry after God. |
