Man is imperfect. At times he is more or less a hypocrite, and then fools say he is moral or immoral. I am not accusing the rich in favor of the masses. Man is the same at the top, at the bottom, in the middle. There is no virtue if there is no immortality. Temptations and occasions put nothing into a man, but only draw out what was in him before. The New Testament, and to a very large extent the Old, is the soul of man. You cannot criticize it. It criticizes you. If our condition were truly happy we would not have to take our minds off thinking about it in order to make ourselves happy. There is a God to punish and avenge. The measure of a man’s real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. A man’s conscience, like a warning line on a highway, tells him what he shouldn’t dobut it does not keep him from doing it. Before God can deliver us, we must undeceive ourselves. |
